An enterocele is where there is a weakness between the rectum and the abdominal cavity, with abdominal contents such as small bowel, bulging into the rectum. During straining the rectum can bulge outwards at this point of weakness or alternatively small bowel can bulge inwards (see Fig 1).

Surgical Treatment of Enterocele

Enterocele often coexists with rectal prolapse, rectocele and pelvic floor descent. These three conditions may contribute to obstructive defecation. Once confirmed on defecating proctography, key-hole ventral rectopexy (either laparoscopic or robotic) can be performed, which repairs all three defects.
